The mass production process of Tesla's 4680 battery has always attracted much attention.

Recently, Tesla announced that the 1 millionth 4680 battery in its pilot plant in California, USA, was successfully rolled off the production line. This means that the Model Y with 4680 batteries will be delivered soon.

It is estimated that each car is equipped with about 1,000 batteries, and 1 million batteries can meet the production of about 1,000 Model Ys.

From the mass production process of Tesla's 4680 large cylindrical battery, several information points are worth paying attention to:

1. Start large-scale mass production in 2022
According to Tesla's plan, the Model Y produced by the Texas Gigafactory will be equipped with 4680 batteries, and delivery will begin at the end of the first quarter. It is expected that by the end of 2022, Tesla's 4680 battery production capacity will reach 100GWh per year, enough to meet 1.3 million electric vehicles. use.

Manufacturing yield has always been a difficulty in mass production of 4680 cells. At present, the yield rate of 4680 large cylindrical cells has increased from 27% at the beginning to 90%. It is worth noting that it remains to be verified whether Tesla 4680 batteries can replicate the production capacity of 100,000 in the short term.

2. Will not crowd out the consumption of lithium iron phosphate batteries
In 2021, Tesla has made it clear that the global standard battery life version Model 3 and Model Y only use lithium iron phosphate batteries. In terms of material selection, Tesla will use 2/3 iron phosphate batteries and 1/3 nickel batteries in the future.

In terms of specific actions, CATL is currently the only supplier of lithium iron phosphate batteries to Tesla. In 2021, the two parties have renewed the four-year long-term supply of lithium-ion power battery products.

It is worth mentioning that the 4680 large cylindrical battery does not conflict with the lithium iron phosphate battery, and the Tesla 4680 large cylindrical battery may also use lithium iron phosphate batteries, which means that it will not affect its domestic lithium iron phosphate battery suppliers. .

3. Or take the lead in replacing the 2170 market
Judging from the mass production process of 4680 batteries, Tesla may only achieve trial installation of some models and cover a small number of models in a short period of time. It may be gradually matched according to different models and versions. The 4680 ternary version may be the first to replace the 2170. The ternary battery market is dominated.

In addition to the high-performance version of Model Y, Tesla's 4680 large cylinder will be subsequently or mainly used in high-end models Model S, Model X and the Cybertruck under development, as well as Semi and other large models that require high energy density.
