Australia's grid-scale battery market created a record year in 2019, and is expected to exceed 500MWh by 2020, and will at least triple the capacity of new energy storage compared to household energy storage.

According to the "2020 Australian Battery Market Report", Australia installed a total of more than 143MWh of commercial and grid-scale battery capacity in 2019, exceeding the 69MWh installed in 2018.

SunWiz, who has been tracking the number of batteries in Australia since 2015, said that in 2019, Australia will add 376 MWh of lithium battery energy storage systems. Although the use of household batteries has actually fallen slightly from 2018, the increase in non-residential installations has set a new annual record.

Specifically, Australia added 22,661 household energy storage systems in 2019, with a total capacity of 233MWh; non-residential battery capacity is 143MWh.

According to the report, from 2015 to 2019, Australia has installed and operated a total of 73,000 battery storage systems, or 1,099MWh. Among them, household battery systems are still the largest contributor, with a storage capacity of 738MWh, while non-residential storage systems are 361MWh.

However, the installed capacity of non-residential energy storage systems tends to surpass that of household energy storage. SunWiz predicts that Australia will have at least 500MWh of non-residential storage put into use in 2020, far exceeding the 143MWh in 2019.

At present, the Australian government is building large-scale battery energy storage projects on a large scale, and many large-capacity projects have landed one after another.

In February of this year, the two major power energy giants AGL and Venal Energy signed an agreement announcing that they would build a large-scale lithium battery energy storage system in southwest Queensland. The battery energy storage system has a capacity of 100 MW and can store a capacity of 150 MWh.

The system will be the largest of the five battery projects currently in Queensland. Three of them are already online, and the other is expected to be operational in Townsville next month. The AGL battery pack will be constructed, operated and maintained by Australia Vena Energy.

In April, French renewable energy developer Neoen announced plans to build a huge lithium battery energy storage system project near Geelong, Australia. Its capacity will be the fourth of the original “Tesla battery” in Hornsdale, South Australia. Times.
