France will inaugurate a battery manufacturing gigafactory on Tuesday (May 30), local time, the first of four battery gigafactories the country is building in the northern Dunkirk region.

The battery plant is reportedly owned by the Automotive Cells Company (ACC), a joint venture between Stellantis, Mercedes-Benz and Total Energy.

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius said, "ACC's new plant marks a key milestone in the transformation of Europe (the automotive industry), making it more resilient, competitive and sustainable in the age of electrification. "

In recent stages, European governments are racing to attract global automakers, hoping to bring the supply of electric vehicle parts closer to the main market.

According to media reports, the battery factory will start producing lithium-ion batteries later this year, with an initial annual production capacity of 13GWh, which will increase to around 40GWh in subsequent stages, enough to supply batteries for about 500,000 cars a year.

ACC Corporation and the local authority say the project is expected to help create up to 2000 jobs by 2030.

promote local development

Europe has been the production center of internal combustion engine vehicles in the world for the past few decades, but with the trend of electrification in the auto industry, Europe also urgently needs to change their consistent strategy.

Achieving the EU's previous decision to stop sales of new internal combustion engine vehicles from 2035 requires a stable battery supply chain.

As European electric vehicles rely heavily on batteries produced in Asia, European leaders are pursuing various incentives to develop electric battery manufacturing within the region.

This problem in Europe has become more urgent with the enactment of the US Inflation Cutting Act. This bill in the United States aims to promote domestic production and manufacturing in the United States through a large number of tax subsidies.

French President Macron pointed out that he hopes to ensure the completion of at least one super factory in the Dunkirk area, and set a goal of producing 2 million electric vehicles in France by 2030.

The other three of the four super battery factories in the Port of Dunkirk include: China Taiwan's Huineng Technology has announced an investment of 5.2 billion euros to build a solid-state battery factory in Dunkirk; In addition, Renault has also established a partnership with local start-up Verkor to produce batteries for its high-end and Alpine electric models. picture
