According to the latest news from foreign media, German and company R&D personnel and scientists are developing new lithium-ion battery systems for vehicles. With the size of lithium-ion batteries currently used in Tesla electric vehicles, they plan to achieve a mileage of 1,000 kilometers on a single charge. .

According to a report by the American technology website LiveScience, according to the statistics of the American Automobile Association, the average American drives only 48 kilometers a day. The current mileage of electric cars on a single charge is already three times this number, but consumption People still dare not buy electric cars.

A German R&D team decided to completely conquer this so-called electric car mileage anxiety.

Located in Dresden, Germany is the Fraunhofer Association for Research Promotion (the largest research and development institution for the use of science and technology in Europe), which has launched a project to develop a new type of lithium-ion battery system, and the researcher MareikeWolter is The project manager, the goal of the project is to achieve 1,000 kilometers of electric vehicles on a single charge.

Walter explained that this project actually started three years ago. At that time, the association and researchers from ThyssenKrupp Systems Engineering in Germany had a brainstorming session to discuss how to improve the lithium-ion battery for vehicles. Battery density.

Their discussion revolved around the Model S100D, the main model of Tesla Motors in California. This car is equipped with a battery pack with a capacity of 100 kWh and can travel 540 kilometers on a single charge.

The volume of this lithium-ion battery pack is large enough, with a length of 4.88 meters, a width of 1.8 meters, and a thickness of 1.2 meters. The battery pack contains a total of more than 8,000 lithium-ion battery cells. Each lithium-ion battery cell is packaged in a cylindrical shape with a height of 6 to 7 cm and a diameter of 2 cm.

Walter said: If we continue to use the space of the Tesla lithium-ion battery pack, but increase the energy density, and finally can continue to drive 1,000 kilometers, then it is really wonderful.

According to reports, one means to improve energy density is to further optimize the materials used in the battery, and another means to redesign the lithium-ion battery pack.

At present, in every lithium-ion battery unit, almost 50% of the space is used for packaging materials, anodes, cathodes, electrolytes and other components. In electric vehicles, additional space must be provided to connect the lithium-ion battery pack to the electrical system.

Water said that the current design of lithium-ion batteries for vehicles wastes too much space. There are some less active components in this system, which is a part that can be continuously optimized.

The above-mentioned project team is also preparing to redesign the entire lithium-ion battery system.

The researchers removed the separate packaging method for lithium-ion battery cells and used a thinner material. The metal flakes are plated with energy storage materials, which are made of a powder ceramic through a polymer mixing device. One side of the material acts as an anode, and the other side acts as a cathode.

The researchers stacked multiple electrodes together like newspapers, and used very thin electrolytes and materials to separate the different electrodes.

The researchers said that in this way, they plan to use a more dense lithium-ion battery in the same volume of Tesla, so that it can store more electrical energy and achieve a single-charge endurance of 1,000 kilometers.

According to Walter's analysis, it is planned to explore such new lithium-ion batteries for vehicles in 2020.
